A PhD thesis will consist of original research work prepared by the PhD student.
Thesis submission deadlines and extensions
PhD students have the possibility to extend the submission of their PhD thesis in the third year for full-time students and in the fifth year for part-time students.
Processing of defence of thesis by videoconference
Only in exceptional circumstances, if certain members of the examination board cannot be present, the defence of the thesis may be carried out by videoconference, with the prior authorisation of the EIDUS Executive Committee, although only two of the members of the examination board will be allowed to participate remotely. In any case, the Chair and the Secretary of the examination board must be present at the place where the defence is being held.

Once the work has been completed, the student will submit the PhD thesis as the initial step prior to its defence and assessment

Thesis by compendium of publications.The PhD thesis may consist of a grouping of research papers published by the PhD student in relevant scientific circles within their field of knowledge in a dissertation that unifies the papers.

In exceptional circumstances determined by the programme’s academic committee, including the participation of companies in the programme or in the EIDUS, the existence of confidentiality agreements with companies or the possibility of generating patents based on the content of the thesis, the PhD student may request the EIDUS Executive Committee to apply the confidentiality procedure in the processing of the PhD thesis, to avoid the public disclosure of results that are protected or might be protectable.

The PhD degree may include the mention “International PhD” on the front, provided that the circumstances governed in the PhD Regulations are met and that the PhD student has accredited this fact at the time of submission of the thesis.

Theses that qualify for the mention “Industrial PhD”. The mention “Industrial PhD” may appear on the front of the PhD degree, provided that the circumstances governed in the PhD Regulations are met and that the PhD student has accredited this fact at the time of submission of the thesis.

Thesis under International Joint Supervision. The PhD degree will include on the front the statement “Thesis in joint supervision with the University U”, provided that the following circumstances are met, as stipulated in the PhD Regulations.

Thesis examination boards
Once the authorisation for the defence of the thesis has been communicated, the body responsible for the programme will propose the examination board that will assess the PhD thesis
Public defence and assessment of thesis
This will consist of the presentation and defence by the PhD student of the prepared research work before the members of the examination boards for its subsequent assessment
