The doctoral thesis will consist of an original research work prepared by the doctoral student. The doctoral thesis may be written and defended in the languages customary for scientific communication in its field of knowledge.

Doctoral students at the University of Seville will be required to carry out their doctoral thesis work for at least six months in facilities of the University of Seville, or of external universities or organizations participating in or collaborating with doctoral programs. In the case of theses carried out under international co-supervision, the provisions of the respective agreement will apply.  For doctoral theses carried out in external organizations not participating in programs under institutional agreements, authorization from the Executive Committee of EIDUS will be required for the thesis to be carried out entirely outside the facilities of the University of Seville. (Chapter 2 of the Doctoral Studies Regulations)

  • Thesis by Compendium of Publications.
The doctoral thesis may consist of a regrouping of research works published by the doctoral student in relevant scientific media within their field of knowledge into a single unifying document. It must be comprised of a minimum of three published contributions or contributions accepted for publication, of which at least two must be in media deemed suitable according to the evaluation criteria published by the CNEAI in relation to the scientific field to which the research line of the doctoral thesis belongs (Arts. 62, 63, 64 of the Doctoral Studies Regulations)

  • Theses Subject to Confidentiality Procedures.
In exceptional circumstances determined by the program's academic committee, such as, among others, the participation of companies in the program or in EIDUS, the existence of confidentiality agreements with companies, or the possibility of generating patents related to the thesis content, the doctoral student may request the Executive Committee of EIDUS to apply the confidentiality procedure in the processing of the doctoral thesis, which avoids the public exposure of protected results or results susceptible to protection  (Arts. 65, 66, 67 of the Doctoral Studies Regulations)

  • Theses Eligible for the International Doctorate Mention on the Doctoral Degree.
The doctoral degree may include on its front page the mention «International Doctorate», provided that the circumstances regulated in Art. 68.1 of the Doctoral Studies Regulations are met, and that the doctoral student must accredit these circumstances at the time of thesis submission, including that at least two of the expert reviewers of the thesis belong to a non-Spanish higher education institution or research institute.

  • Theses Eligible for the Industrial Doctorate Mention.
The front page of the Doctoral Degree may include the mention «Industrial Doctorate», provided that the circumstances regulated in Art. 69 of the Doctoral Regulations are met, and that the doctoral student must accredit these circumstances at the time of thesis submission.
  • Theses under International Co-supervision.
The doctoral degree will include on its front page the endorsement «Thesis under co-supervision with University U», provided that the following circumstances regulated in Art. 70 of the Doctoral Regulations are met, including that an agreement has been signed between the University of Seville and a foreign university within the framework of which the doctoral thesis is carried out, and that it will be supervised by two or more doctors, of whom at least one belongs to the University of Seville and another to the foreign university (Art. 70 and 71 of the Doctoral Studies Regulations)

Doctoral students have the possibility of extending the submission of their doctoral thesis in the fourth year of permanence for full-time students and in the seventh year of permanence for part-time students (see Permanence Regime Diagram).

In the case of doctoral students with a disability degree equal to or greater than 33 percent, the possibility of extension will be in the sixth year for full-time and in the ninth year for part-time (see Permanence Regime Diagram for Doctoral Students with Disabilities).

Students enrolled before the 2023-24 academic year:
Under the previous regulations, for students enrolled before the 2023-24 academic year, they will have the possibility to request an extension in the third year of full-time permanence, and the fifth year for part-time permanence (see Permanence Regime Diagram for Continuing Students).

Upon completion of the work, the student will submit the doctoral thesis as the start of the procedures prior to its defense and evaluation. They must meet the requirements for thesis submission and have external expert reports on the doctoral thesis.

Once authorization for the thesis defense has been communicated, the body responsible for the program will propose the examining board that will evaluate the doctoral thesis.

This will consist of the doctoral student's presentation and defense of the elaborated research work before the members of the examining board for its subsequent evaluation.

Only in exceptional circumstances, if it is not possible for some of the examining board members to be physically present, the thesis defense may be carried out via videoconference, with prior authorization from the Executive Committee of EIDUS, although only two of the board members will be permitted to participate remotely. In any case, the president and secretary of the examining board must be present at the location where the defense takes place.

Once the doctoral thesis has been approved, the University of Seville will be responsible for archiving it in an open electronic format in an institutional repository and will send, in electronic format, a copy of the thesis and all necessary complementary information to the Ministry of Universities for its publication in a national repository, which will be managed by the General Secretariat of Universities.
