Study period and extensions

The duration of doctoral studies will be a maximum of four years for full-time students, and seven years for part-time students, counted from the date of the doctoral student's enrollment in the program until the thesis submission date (see Permanence Regime Diagram).

In the case of doctoral students with a disability degree equal to or greater than 33 percent, the duration of doctoral studies will be a maximum of six years for full-time students and nine years for part-time students (see Permanence Regime Diagram for Doctoral Students with Disabilities).

Before the deadline, if the thesis submission request has not been presented, the Academic Committee responsible for the program, upon the doctoral student's request, may authorize an extension of this period for one more year.

Students enrolled before the 2023-24 academic year:
Under the previous regulations, for students enrolled before the 2023-24 academic year, the duration of doctoral studies will remain a maximum of three years for full-time students, and five years for part-time students, counted from the date of the doctoral student's enrollment in the program until the thesis submission date.  If, after the established deadlines for full-time studies, the thesis has not been submitted, the program's academic committee may authorize a one-year extension, which exceptionally could be extended for another additional year. In the case of part-time studies, the extension may be authorized for two more years, which, exceptionally, could also be extended for another additional year (see Permanence Regime Diagram for Continuing Students)

Students enrolled in a doctoral program may request a change in dedication modality a maximum of two times throughout their thesis development by submitting a request to the program's academic committee. The academic committee will decide on the request, informing the EIDUS Executive Committee for the purpose of updating the student's record. P01 - Request for change of permanence modality

Before the end of the period, counted from the date of formalization of the first enrollment for academic supervision (date of issuance of the first receipt) in the program until the date of deposit of the doctoral thesis, according to the doctoral student's permanence regime, if the thesis deposit request has not been submitted, the doctoral student must request an extension of permanence from the program's academic committee, which, within the permanence limits set by current regulations, may grant the extension, with a favorable report from the tutor and thesis supervisor.

The deadline for doctoral thesis submission can be consulted in the University of Seville's Virtual Secretariat (SEVIUS):

Obtaining an extension will be an essential requirement to submit the request for enrollment for academic thesis supervision in the following academic year. Failure to request an extension, as well as the denial of the requested extension, will be cause for permanent withdrawal from the program.

Procedure for requesting, reporting, and granting/denying extensions

The doctoral student will submit a request that must be reported by the tutor and by the supervisor(s). Subsequently, the program's academic committee, after reviewing the reports, may grant or deny the extension: Annex 1: Request for Permanence Extension

In the event of unfavorable reports or denial of the permanence extension, it will be essential to indicate the reasons for the decision, accompanied by a justified report in the designated documents: Annex 2: Unfavorable report motivation from tutor/supervisor and  Annex 3: Unfavorable report motivation from the academic committee

During their time in a program, students may request the following types of leaves:

Leaves for temporary incapacity or any other situation covered by current regulations

Leaves for temporary incapacity, birth, adoption, foster care for adoption purposes, acogimiento, risk during pregnancy, risk during lactation, gender violence, or any other situation covered by current regulations. These situations will interrupt the calculation of the maximum duration period for doctoral studies. The obligation to renew enrollment will be suspended throughout the entire leave period, proceeding, once cleared, as established in the enrollment regulations. Therefore, in these cases, the academic years in which the student does not enroll will not count towards the time of permanence in the program.

Temporary Leave

Doctoral students may request periods of temporary leave from the program for a total of up to two years. The request must be addressed to and justified before the program's responsible Academic Committee, which will decide on the appropriateness of granting the request: P03 - Request for temporary leave

Students enrolled before the 2023-24 academic year: Under the still-current previous regulations, doctoral students enrolled before the 2023-24 academic year may request temporary leave from the program for a maximum period of one year, extendable for up to one more year, for justified cause.

Effects of Authorized Leaves

In the cases of Temporary Leave for personal reasons and LEAVE DUE TO TEMPORARY INCAPACITY or other situations foreseen in the current regulations:

  1. During the authorized leave period, the student is exempt from renewing their annual academic supervision enrollment, from carrying out the annual monitoring of their research plan and the doctoral student's activity document and, in the cases that apply, from requesting an extension. All these obligations will become enforceable again for the doctoral student at the end of the authorized leave.
  2. Once the leave ends, the student must resume their obligations related to the program's doctoral training and the development of their research plan.
  3. The non-fulfillment of training activities required by the program and the lack of updating of the research plan during an authorized leave period will not be taken into account for the doctoral student's annual evaluation. In this case, the academic committee will adjust the doctoral student's evaluation to the time in which they have been active in the program.

Permanent Leaves from the Doctoral Program

Causes for permanent withdrawal from the program are:

  • The express communication from the doctoral student of definitively abandoning the program, via written submission to the EIDUS management, which will inform the program's academic committee.
  • The expiration of the established deadlines for the duration of studies in each dedication regime as established in the current regulations.
  • Receiving unfavorable annual evaluation in both calls
  • The non-renewal of the annual academic supervision enrollment, except in the cases of temporary leave or leave due to temporary incapacity, birth, adoption, foster care for adoption purposes, acogimiento, risk during pregnancy, risk during lactation, and gender violence or any other situation contemplated in the current regulations
